Robert W. Montgomery,
Director of Maui Komei
Juku
6th Dan Muso Jikiden Eishen Ryu Iaijutsu
I
have continuously studied and practiced Japanese martial arts
for over 30 years attaining dan ranking in judo, jujutsu and
iaijutsu. I have also studied the making, use and judging of
antique Japanese weapons with particular focus on the sword
for over 23 years. I also have a collection of these arms and
armor. Japanese history, culture, philosophy, religion and
language related to the martial arts and weapons are my
ongoing study. Since 1980, I have had the opportunity to
travel extensively in Japan.
While some of this travel occurred while conducting business
in Japan most of the travel was done in pursuit of knowledge
and experiences related to the study of sword culture and
iaijutsu. Under the tutoring of the world renown expert John
Yumoto (now deceased) I dedicated nine weeks of travel solely
for the study of swords and their fittings in private
collections and public museum. This travel included visits to
the forges of famous artisans as well as to famous polishers
of swords.
The
seven years prior to moving to Maui in 1994 I resided in Tokyo
and studied Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu under the 21st
Grandmaster, Sekiguchi Komei. During this period I trained 15
to 21 hours per week. I also traveled within Japan as well as
outside Japan with Sekiguchi Sensei to demonstrate the sword
art and it's philosophy.
In 1993 he gave me the Japanese name of
Sekiguchi Kenshin which is the name the Japan Hombu knows me
by. He has delegated to me the responsibility of perpetuating
the philosophy and technical skills of the ryu and his school
by directing me to establish the American headquarters of the
Komei school.
I
continue my training and study by practicing every day and
being prepared to teach every day. I have built a good size
dojo in my home and also have training space at the
Maui Okinawa Kenjin Kai. Members of
the Maui Komei Juku take part in Sekiguchi Sensei's special
training sessions on Maui and at the Tokyo headquarters.

After 42 years in management of the design, development and
manufacturing of high tec products, in the US as well as
overseas I now devote the majority of my time to koryu and
kobudo studies and practice. I am always eager to share,
without constraint, what knowledge and experience I have with
others regardless of their orientation or discipline. I have a
high regard and appreciation for the senseis I have had the
privilege to study under. I always consider myself a student
and look forward to learning from those I meet. This helps
keep me in fellowship with many budojin around the world.
